BACKGROUND
The City of Chino’s Public Works Department is committed to maintaining and operating the city’s vital infrastructure, ensuring the reliable delivery of essential services to its residents and community. One of those essential services is potable water. Chino’s drinking water is produced by removing contaminants using Ion-Exchange process. This process involves the removal of nitrate and perchlorate via a resin based composite materials at any of our three water treatment plants. Chemicals are needed for various stages of the process, such as 32% hydrochloric acid and 26% brine salt which are added with the right dosage to achieve maximum contaminant removal.
Bulk salt is mixed with water to create a brine that is needed to regenerate the resin during the ion-exchange process. On average, when there is more demand during the summer, about 100 tons of salt per week is used for all three water treatment plants.
Hydrochloric acid (HCL) is needed during the Ion-exchange process. Mostly for the back wash of the resin, and to descale the pipes in the treatment plant. HCL is also used to lower the pH of the brine waste to maintain compliance with wastewater discharge regulations. On average, about 900 gallons of hydrochloric acid per week is used for all water treatment plants. This number fluctuates based on the amount of water treated.
These two chemicals ensure that our water treatment system remains safe and reliable, maintaining the quality and quantity of water provided to customers.
