BACKGROUND

For the past several years, the City Council has voted to cancel the regularly scheduled meetings in the month of August due to conflicts with events of Citywide interest. The “National Night Out” event takes place on the first Tuesday in August which conflicts with Chino’s regularly scheduled City Council meeting.

“National Night Out” is a nationwide event to promote and improve partnerships between police departments and the communities they serve. The Chino Police Department not only aims to bring the community together but to make Chino a safer place to live and work. The City Council has continued to express interest in attending the many “National Night Out” events that occur in the City on this night.

ISSUES/ANALYSIS

Given the importance of “National Night Out” to our community, it is recommended that the City Council authorize staff to cancel the August 5, regular City Council meeting to offer Council Members an opportunity to engage with members of the community during “National Night Out”.

Staff also recommends the City Council cancel the August 19, 2025 regular City Council meeting, going dark for the remainder of August.

Should the City Council approve these August cancellations, the next regular meeting of the City Council after the July 15 regular meeting would be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. with Closed Session no sooner than 4:00 p.m., if necessary.

Overall, staff recommends the City Council approve the following schedule:

Cancel the August 5, regular City Council meeting

Cancel the August 19, regular City Council meeting
